John Wesley

John Wesley was a famous 18th-century18th-century AnglicanAnglican clergyman and ChristianChristian theologiantheologian who was an early leader in the Methodist movementMethodist movement. This was the first widely successful evangelicalevangelical movement in the United KingdomUnited Kingdom. Wesley is said to have visited or passed through Llanelli on twelve occasions, preaching in the vicinity of the Parish Churchyard on most of his visits. From John Wesley’s diary, he stated that when he was at Llanelli in 1774…“I preached at five near sister Deer’s door to a good company of plain country people”. From old town plans, and according to the Victorian historian John Innes, this was very close to what is today, the Verandah Restaurant, where a Blue Plaque commemorates this occasion.

Roedd John Wesley yn glerigwr a diwinydd Anglicanaidd enwog o’r 18fed ganrif ac yn arweinydd cynnar yn y mudiad Methodistaidd. Y mudiad hwn oedd yr un efengylaidd cyntaf i lwyddo ar raddfa eang yn y Deyrnas Unedig. Dywedwyd i Wesley deithio trwy neu ymweld â thref Llanelli ar ddeuddeg achlysur, yn pregethu yng nghyffiniau Eglwys y plwyf yn y rhan fwyaf ohonynt. O’i ddyddiadur, pan roedd e yn Llanelli yn 1774 meddai.....”Pregethais am bump ger drws sister Deer i gwmni da o werin bobl”. O hen gynlluniau’r dref, ac yn ôl yr hanesydd Fictorianaidd John Innes, roedd yn fan honno yn agos iawn i dŷ bwyta’r Verandah presennol ble gallwch weld plac glas i goffáu’r achlysur.
