Talk on Coal Mining in Llanelli
Tuesday 13th. September at the Queen Victoria Club Llanelli
Phil Cullen, author of 'Gwendraeth Valley Coal Mines' and 'Outburst: Curse below the Gwendraeth Valley', gave a talk on the coal mines below the town of Llanelli.
With old maps kindly lent by Llanelli library and some samples of coal, including the shiny and high carbon content coal referred to as anthracite mined below the town, the talk was enthusiastically received by a well attended meeting. This high calorific fuel led to efficient furnaces leading on to the production of steel and its supporting industries, factories, docks and railways. With no more mining below the town, Llanelli now sits above a warren of water filled tunnels.
Vice chairman Lyn John (left), thanked Phil Cullen for his talk and asked if he would come again to expand on the coal mining story.
