Malcolm Symons, B.Sc., Ph.D.

Born and raised in Llanelli. Attended Lakefield Primary School, Copperworks Junior School and Llanelli Boys' Grammar School. Obtained a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering and a Ph.D. in Geotechnical Engineering at the University of Leeds. Worked in the construction industry for consulting and contracting engineering companies and for the Transmission Project Group of the Central Electricity Generating Board.
Moved into academic life in Cardiff in 1967 teaching geotechnical engineering, researching, and publishing internationally on the load capacity of piled foundations. A secondary research involvement into the problems of construction in old coal mining areas led to a growing interest in Llanelli's coal mining history. Retired from Cardiff University in 1992 becoming a self-employed consultant engaged by consulting engineering companies for technical advice, and also acting as expert witness in legal disputes concerning the correct interpretation of the wording of old coal leases.
My industrial, academic and consultancy life is now behind me but I maintain a continuing interest in Llanelli's industrial history with Volume 2 of "Coal Mining in the Llanelli area, 1830 to 1871" due for publication in the near future."
